What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle and highly effective hands-on therapy, using no manipulation.

It is so gentle that it is safe and suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly, and also in fragile or acutely painful conditions. Indeed, it is often appropriate when other therapies may be unsafe, such as during pregnancy, after an operation, accident, fall or injury, for newborns and for highly sensitive children.

During treatment you will usually lie on a treatment table and experience the light touch of the therapist's hands, eliciting responses and reorganisation on cellular level and in the various tissues, organs and systems of your body.

You may feel a deep sense of relaxation, and possibly become aware of heat, tingling, pulsations or other sensations. The therapist listens, via their hands and field, to what is going on inside, and in this way both identifies and works with the causes of the conditions and symptoms and relieves tension, distortions and pain held in various places.

The therapeutic work is led by the inherent internal wisdom of the client's body, which decides the pace and order of priority in which issues are addressed. This allows and timely conscious and unconscious integration of the changes taking place.

CranioSacral Therapy is becoming much better known all over the world these days, thanks to rapidly expanding development and interest in this deeper field of work. It is based on a number of findings about the body’s subtle physiology, made by osteopaths in the USA nearly 100 years ago.

These findings show that every cell in a healthy body expresses rhythmic movement, as if responding to invisible waves, which is fundamental to life – this rhythmic movement is called craniosacral motion or cranial wave.

There are different tides at different depths of being and the different styles of CranioSacral Therapy work with one or more of these. Within biomechanic, or classic, CST, the focus lies on the most superficial of these tides, the Cranial Rhythmic Impulse. In biodynamic CST the focus lies on the next two deeper tides, the mid- and long tides, and the degrees of stillness behind and at the core of everything.

At the core of the body the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord, expresses this motion in a tidelike ebb and flow, while bones, organs and other structures and tissues in the body in response each follow their own particular pattern of movement. This motion is so subtle that it is barely measurable with instruments, but the hands of a trained therapist are able to perceive and subtly interact with it in a therapeutic way, which brings about self (and cell) re-organisation and healing in the various tissues and systems as well as in the different layers of the body’s energy field.

How does CranioSacral Therapy work?

In response to physical knocks or emotional stress, the body’s tissues and subtle energy fields contract. Sometimes, particularly when the shock is severe or occurs within an emotional situation, the tissues or energy field stay contracted.

Any stresses, strains, tensions, traumas or toxicity which have been stored in the body will restrict the body’s functioning and may give rise to problems ímmediately or over the years. The effects may be both physical (such as back pain, migraine or digestive disorders) and emotional (such as anxiety or depression). Typically any person will have a number of these restrictions interconnecting in a complex web in all the physical and subtle layers or sub-layers of the body (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual).

Restrictions in the body’s functioning show up in the way that craniosacral motion is expressed, or not expressed. CranioSacral therapists are trained to feel this subtle motion or absence of motion and connection in the body, which indicate areas of congestion, restriction or distortion of tissues and flow. In this way they can identify the possible origin of a problem or interconnected issues and their consequently arising compensatory problems.

The presence of the therapist's hands and attention reflects back to the body the pattern it is holding, providing an opportunity for the body to let go of its restrictive pattern and return to ease of functioning.

This happens at a deep, unconscious level within the body, but it occurs in the same way as we might take other, more conscious decisions. For example, if someone holds a mirror in front of you when you are frowning, you become aware of your expression and may well choose to relax your eyebrows.

As well as releasing the tension of tissues and energy fields, it frees up the energy which the body was previously using to hold itself in contraction, making an increase in the overall level of energy available one of the many benefits of this therapy.

Since it is your body (rather than your mind, or the therapist’s mind) that sets the pace and priorities, you may find that the reason you came for treatment is not what changes first.

For some people it may take a few sessions to connect with or identify what they are feeling and what is happening in the body as it responds to the touch. Whether you can feel anything or not, the body is responding and makes the changes.

In order to gain the full benefit of CranioSacral Therapy and its cumulative effects you should consider having a series of treatments. Most clients have a one or a number of known issues they would like help with and they may have had them for a long time. The body may need a shorter or longer period of sessions to work with those and a number of more serious or pressing issues which the client was previously unaware of.

Can CranioSacral Therapy help me?

As a holistic therapy, CranioSacral Therapy may aid people of all ages with almost any condition, by realigning, reconnecting, freeing up internal resources, raising the vitality and enabling the body’s own self-healing processes to be utilised in the most appropriate manner, thereby bringing the whole out of disparity and more into coherence. It can greatly improve your quality of life in many ways

• physically: symptom relief and/or releasing the restriction causing the pain in the first place, ease and power of movement instead of stiffness and weakness

• physiologically: releasing and realigning spine, cranium, central and peripheral nervous systems, heart, lungs and blood circulatory system, gastro-intestinal system and organs, whole body fascia system, meridian systems and organs, all of which aid towards optimal functioning

• emotionally-mentally: lessening the emotional loading, releasing restricted thought patterns and expanding the subtle layers of the body’s energy field

• bringing understanding: understanding why you and your body are experiencing the health or progress challenges you are is a big part of the cure. With understanding, you can change the circumstances your body has to function in, be it weakness in one side of the body causing repeated injuries there, recurring issues or pain in certain areas, known or previously undetected gastro-intestinal disturbances causing systemic problems with varying cascading effects or undetected toxicity or emotional reaction causing organ contraction and nutrient deficiencies, poor organ functioning as well as depression or other mental imbalances down the line.

CranioSacral Therapy as Prevention and for Well-being

You don’t have to be ill or have any particular symptoms to benefit from CranioSacral Therapy. Prevention is much better and easier than trying to cure something that’s already gone haywire.

Highly developed therapists may feel issues in their forming state, before they have become fully noticeable, allowing the body to rectify those situations before they get out of hand.

The alleviation of the pressure life’s stressors puts on body and mind, and the increased sense of vitality, overall balance and well-being CranioSacral Therapy can bring are welcome to most of us at any time.

4H CranioSacral Therapy Treatments

At times you may find four-handed sessions available. A 4H session is done with two therapists working together on one client. The changes and integration able to happen when two skilled therapists work in synchrony with a client far exceeds what is possible in a single one therapist session.

On average a 4H session can equal 3-4 single sessions. Typically, if you receive a series of 4H sessions, the sessions can be spaced further apart than with single sessions, as you will get much further with your body’s inherent treatment plan in each session and your total progression is faster.

You do not have to worry about being “overdone” in a 4H session, since your body decides how much it is willing to release at any one time.
